Obsession and WhatsApp: How couples can break because of this app.

Elena wrote yesterday for the last time, at four-thirty in the morning, and today she has not yet shown signs of life; Tania is now online; Marcelino has got up early, at half past six he was already connected. It is information obtained through a mobile phone and we get it, with just a click on each of the contacts on WhatsApp. An instant messaging application that is changing the world of social relations and also causing many family crisis or tensions between friends.

The advantages of WhatsApp are obvious: “It allows to be connected anytime, anywhere,” says Francesc Núñez, a sociologist at the Open University of Catalunya. “It’s a messaging system that allows to have contact with people from our life” says Fernando Azor, psychologist and tutor at the University Camilo Jose Cela in Madrid. “It’s a great technology and its creators should be congratulated, it facilitates interaction and exchange of information in real time,” said Enrique García Huete, a psychology professor at the Complutense University of Madrid. But like any new technology, WhatsApp needs to be “domesticated” to avoid surprises. And it is that the characteristics of this new channel of communication can also cause stress or anxiety. The main change with respect to SMS messages, emails, phone calls or channels such as Twitter or Facebook, is that the WhastApp betrays the wearer. All the user’s contacts have information instantly, about the last time that someone has connected, whether it is online and can also sense whether the person who sent the message was readen.

Although it is in the relationships where psychologists have began detecting breaks (for connections after hours that can not be explained later) and obsessive behavior prompted by the use of WhatsApp.

“This is a perfect place to enhance relations in the first phase of the relationship, but then can lead to problems if one starts to become obsessed by being in constant contact with his or her partner,” says García Huete. One answer studs, when you know that the other person has received the message it may result in these cases in conflict. And also it connects to a time when the other partner believes that the loved one is doing something else. All these tracks are documented and more than one or a cheating has already been hunted for its activity in the WhatsApp.

The possibility of obtaining such information instantly is the most significant with respect to other channels such as email or telephone exchange.

The sickest phase comes, however, after the break up. “We are attending everyday more and more cases of people who months after breaking up with his or her partner still control what he or she does through WhatsApp, and that creates a lot of anguish and anxiety,” says Azor. And this control “does not take hours, as it continues to look, again and again, to see what is the last thing someone else has done”. This psychologist stresses, moreover, that the implementation of these new communication channels its going to vary future relations of many couples and make them depend on whether or not to share “interest in the use of these ways to interact.”

WhatsApp as the main cause of… a lot of break ups!

The topics has been talked about, it has generated much controversy, and now, finally, suspicions are confirmed. A recent study of CyberPsychology and Behaviour Journal, argues that 28 million ruptures are already accounted thanks to the phenomenon of text applications such as WhatsApp or Facebook.
The technology that often plays in favor of couples in terms of communication has also its bad side on terms of jealousy or mistrust. It can break a lot of relationships and it, actually, have already done it.

These breaks would be caused by the known as “double check Syndrome.” When you send a message via WhatsApp and this reaches the server, a grey tick appears on the right side. When it arrives to the mobile phone o the person, it appears a second oe. This does not mean that the recipient has read it, as the company said last year. This created an anxiety state.
This factor must be added to the additional information of the App that shows us the “last connection was …” which shows if the user is online or, in other case, the last time that she or he was.
As demonstrated now by CyberPsychology and Behaviour Journal, this issue has generated numerous conflicts between couples, estimating more than 300 million active of users who have the platform in the world.
The study authors explain that applications like WhatsApp are “very favorable” in the first phase of relations, but eventually begin to reveal its negative effects, accompanied by the increase of jealousy and control.

How to unable WhatsApp from saving files.

This is one of the most request features by the public and one of the causes we run out of free space on our phones. WhatsApp automatically saves all the photos we received in all conversations. But it can be disabled, luckly for us.

To disable the autosaving feature of WhatsApp, we must go to the Settings screen, enter to Chat Settings, where the media of our conversations is managed. There we will present an option to enable or disable auto-saving of received files:

Whatsapp Chat Settings

WARNING # 1: to disable this feature, you no longer will need to review the photo list to remove those who do not want to be seen.

So it depends on how much valuable or trashy media you receive. If most of the contents are not worth saving you should unable this function.

But before… you better enable WhatsApp’s backup.

WARNING # 2: When the auto-saving of images feature is disabled, photos of existing conversations will be deleted. To avoid losing important material, leave it activated before you do it with the backup functionality. This is also found on the Chats Settings screen.

On iPhone, after making the copy, it is enough to reinstall WhatsApp keeping active our iCloud account. Thus, the application will detect it and automatically restore all chats with the first use assistant.
The backup file is saved as a file over to the internal memory of the device, both on Android and Windows Phone. So do not forget to move the file if you change phone and want to migrate all conversations. Or even delete it if you sell or give away the device.

In iOS, however, as long as we use the same iCloud account, it is possible to download a copy on any device of the Apple brand.

How to avoid be spyed on WhatsApp.

Privacy is always a must on our agendas, and there is always a question related to one of the messaging applications of the moment: Can you really spy on WhatsApp, or are these ads scams?

At this point it seems a recurring theme, but the privacy of users remains as an important issue. It is very serious to find that an application lets air our personal data, and developers must work hard to get us a corner of privacy on the Internet.
WhatsApp, being one of the most used messaging applications by users, is what we find more critical to keep our data safe. And when there are hundreds of services that promise to break the privacy of WhatsApp, it is normal that users get worriedabout. We want to put some light on the matter and tell what is truth about spying WhatsApp, and what is just bad promo.

Surely you will remember the analysis we did to fund that service which was able to record our last time of connection, although we had hidden it in the privacy options.

Spys controlling our last connection.

As we will describe in great detail, hiding our connection time is not much, and this is one of the sections that you can easily spy. Applications that handle this for us have been released on Google Store.

As for solutions, we can not do much about it, but we can hide both states and photographs so that nobody sees them, or only our contacts.

Conversations and sent files.

We have explained how some of the data that we have free to the public can be spyed, but now comes the part where we are going to begin denying: there is no magic access to our conversations or our sent and recieved. That’s something that stays between your contacts and your phone, thanks to WhatsApp’s encryption and other improvements.

Of course, the temptation to know the messages from someone’s chats are common, and there are many scams that attempt to exploit this evil curiosity.

You can spy on an Android phone, but it is dangerous and crime

Indeed, the greatest danger of using these services is for your portfolio: they will take as much money as possible until we realize and then stop them. In other words, avoid these services, because they are illegal and because of the health of your portfolio.

After talking about the real and unreal spy possibilities of WhatsApp on Android, we’re going to fantasize a little.

First possible case: using malicious WhatsApp’s web
As many of you know already, WhatsApp’s web is already available and we need our phone to make it work, because it acts as a bridge between the browser and the WhatsApp’s servers. Someone with malicious intent could, at one time, log on our WhatsApp’s web on your phone while we are not paying attention, so be aware of your conversations.

Second possible case: spying notifications
The applications do not have to access the messages within the application, but it does not matter if they get access to notifications. As you know, in notification’s preview the message is displayed, to see data as the sender and the message itself before entering the application, and a malicious application could use these special permissions to create their own spying method.

Third possible case: A modified APK WhatsApp
A developer could take malicious WhatsApp’s APK, modify it at their convenience to intercept messages, and strain as if the application was unchanged. This has already been done with payment applications uploaded to illegal repositories of applications,.

We could become paranoid, but then we would have to throw our smartphones through out of the window and return to smoke signals. The important thing is that these security flaws get fixed as soon as possible. All we can do isrely on the experts  of the applications and check if our code is free.

What I can do to be safe?

Just to be safe, being aware of these threats and future threats that may arise, we recommend taking the following steps:

Keep updated version of WhatsApp from our smartphone to avoid old mistakes, while maintaining our Android updated as far as possible.
Spend a minute on privacy options, and specify who we want to see data as the last connection time and profile’s image.
Keep your Android device with a screen lock to prevent unauthorized persons malicious applications.
Avoid downloading WhatsApp from unknown sources or sites with a bad reputation: always go to the official sites as Google Play or WhatsApp website.
